Here's where to find Friday night fish fries for Lent in Des Moines

Crunchy breaded fried fish with tartar sauce and lots of lemon — and don't forget the hush puppies, potato pancakes and coleslaw.

This Lenten season specialty isn't just for those of the Roman Catholic faith. Everyone in Des Moines can get in on the fish fry acticon on one of six Friday nights in the weeks ahead.

Here are some local churches and restaurants where you can find a fish fry. And be sure to save room for dessert — you can't give up everything for Lent.

All Saints Catholic Church

650 NE 52nd Ave., Des Moines

The Knights of Columbus will hold its Lenten fish fry from 5 to 7 p.m. on all six Fridays, Feb. 28 to April 3. Enjoy hand-breaded Alaskan pollock, grilled cheese sandwiches, baked potato or french fries, macaroni and cheese, bread and butter. Beverages and dessert are included. 

Price: $9 for adults, $4 for children, age 6-12; children under 6 eat for free. Carryout is available.

Basilica of St. John

1915 University Ave., Des Moines 

Fish fry dinners take place on the six Fridays during Lent from 4:45 to 6:45 p.m. The menu includes fried catfish or baked seasoned pollock — and fried catfish nuggets for the kids — with an egg roll, Spanish rice and two sides. The meal also includes bread, dessert, and drinks.

Enter the church hall through the northeast parking lot door. An elevator is available.

Christ the King Parish

5711 S.W. Ninth St., Des Moines

Knights of Columbus will hold a fish fry dinner all six Fridays from 5 to 7 p.m. The menu includes spicy baked salmon, all-you-can-eat fried cod, baked Parmesan-crusted tilapia, or cheese pizza for kids. Sides will include french fries, coleslaw, cheesy potatoes, green beans and dinner rolls. Beverages include lemonade and iced tea. The youth group will sell homemade desserts as a fundraiser to pay for a trip to the National Catholic Youth Conference in 2021.

Holy Trinity Catholic Church & School

2926 Beaver Ave., Des Moines

Knights of Columbus will serve its Lenten Fish Dinners for four Fridays: Feb. 28, March 6 and 27 and April 3. Baked tilapia and baked beer-battered cod, fish tacos, mac and cheese, a potato, vegetables, coleslaw, a dinner roll and assorted beverages will be available. 

Desserts are provided by the Holy Trinity youth group, according to the church's website. Free-will offering supports youth group activities.

Price: $9 adults, $5 kids 5-11; under 5, free; $35 maximum per family.

Our Lady's Immaculate Heart Catholic Church

The Knights of Columbus fish fry dinner will take place in the OLIH multi-purpose room for three Fridays — March 6 and 20, and April 3 from 5 to 7 p.m. The menu will include hand-battered fried pollock, baked cod, fish tacos, baked potatoes, corn, green beans, dinner rolls, ice cream sundaes and grilled cheese and tater tots for the kids. A free-will offering will be taken and all donations support local charities.

Takeout service will be available.

Sacred Heart Church

For all six Fridays, Sacred Heart's youth ministry is holding its all-you-can-eat fish fry dinners from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the school gym. Dinner includes hand-battered fish, lemon-pepper baked fish, fish tacos, a baked potato, fries, coleslaw, a roll and a cheese pizza option. Desserts are available for purchase and all proceeds benefit youth programs.

Takeout service is available.

Price: $10 adults; $5 kids 3-10; kids 2 and under, free. $40 family maximum.

Sts. John & Paul Catholic Church

1401 First Ave. S., Altoona

This Friday night fish fry, served by the Knights of Columbus, is all-you-can-eat from 4:30 to 7 p.m. for all six Fridays. This year's menu includes baked or deep-fried Alaskan pollock with baked potato or potato salad, green beans, homemade coleslaw and wheat or white bread. For the kids, macaroni and cheese or cheese pizza are available. Drinks include coffee, lemonade, iced tea and water. Dessert is free with a donation to support parish youth groups.

The event takes place in the parish hall. Drive-thru and take-out are also available. Enter on First Avenue and drive to the east side of the church building near Circle Drive to place your order, pay and pick up.

Price: $10 adults; $5 kids 6-12; under 5, free. Customers can choose to add a skewer of shrimp for $4. Drive-thru and takeout, $10 per order (includes three fish fillets, coleslaw, Hawaiian roll and choice of potato salad or baked potato — no substitutions and no child-size orders are available with the drive-thru, but kids' mac and cheese and pizza meals will be available).

The Knights of Columbus fish fries will take place all six Fridays from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Dinner includes fried or baked fish with a variety of sides.

Knights of Columbus will have a Fiesta Fish Bake in the parish hall on two Fridays: March 27 and April 3 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The menu will include baked salmon, cod, a full taco and salsa bar, mac and cheese, grilled cheese sandwiches and cheese quesadillas. Takeout is available. Proceeds benefit Knights of Columbus and church youth groups. Stations of the Cross at 5:30 p.m.

Parking is available in the rear off Grand Avenue. Enter the church through the east entrance.

St. Boniface Catholic Church

The Knights of Columbus will be serving its annual Lenten Fish Fries the six Fridays of Lent from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at St. Boniface Parish Hall in Waukee. The Lenten smorgasbord includes baked tilapia, fried cod, fried shrimp, spaghetti, cheese pizza, coleslaw, vegetables, jello, and chips.

Desserts offered by the St. Boniface youth groups (free-will offering).

Price: $10 adults; $5 kids 3-10; kids under 3, free; $35 immediate family maximum.

St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church

The Knights of Columbus fish fry will take place all six Fridays from 5:30 to 7:15 p.m. in the parish hall. Dinner includes fried pollock, baked salmon, baked potatoes, french fries, cheese pizza, mac and cheese, mixed vegetables, coleslaw and breadsticks. Beverages include iced tea, water and lemonade. Desserts are a la carte and proceeds benefit the St. Francis of Assisi Scouts.

St. Elizabeth Seton Church

The St. Elizabeth Seton Knights of Columbus will hold Lenten fish fries on three Fridays — March 6 and 20, and April 3 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the church fellowship hall. The menu will include baked and deep-fried fish fillets, coleslaw, a baked potato or potato chips, rolls, coffee, and lemonade. Desserts will be available from the St. Elizabeth Seton Ladies Guild. Carryout dinners are also available. Some of the proceeds will be donated to the Carlisle High School Dollars for Scholars scholarship program.

St. Joseph's Catholic Church

The Knights of Columbus fish fry is hosted by Knights of Columbus Council No. 10980 for all six Fridays during the Lenten season from 5 to 7 p.m. Dinners include baked or fried fish, hush puppies, green bean casserole, tuna noodle casserole, mac and cheese, cheesy potatoes, a roll and butter along with dessert and drinks.

Price: $9 adults, $7 kids 6-12; kids under 6, free. $40 family maximum (immediate family only). Punch cards can be purchased at $48. The card has six punches for six meals.

St. Luke the Evangelist

On March 27, the Knights of Columbus is holding a fish fry in the church gym. Drive-thru service available from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.; dine-in service is from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Takeout dinners available during dine-in service.  The menu includes fried and baked pollock, homemade potato chips, green beans, coleslaw and dessert, with macaroni and cheese or fried mac and cheese bites for kids option. Free-will donation will be taken and donations will support local charities.

A fish fry dinner will be held for all six Fridays in Palmer Hall from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Dinner includes baked and fried Alaska pollock with no wheat flour, french fries or baked potatoes, homemade coleslaw, fresh-baked dinner rolls, and grilled cheese sandwiches. Beverages include water, lemonade and coffee. Desserts will be available for a free-will offering.

Takeout service is available for $10 each.

Bonefish Grill

650 S. Prairie View Drive, West Des Moines

Bonefish Grill is offering a Lenten special called Fish Frydays beginning on Feb. 28 until April 10. Diners can enjoy the Angler’s Catch — battered cod, four battered and fried shrimp, two hush puppies on a bed of fries and coleslaw. The special will also include choices of cocktail sauce, tartar sauce, ketchup and malt vinegar on the side with a lemon wedge. 

Other Lenten-friendly specialties are also available like the OMG (Ocean Mixed Grill) 4-course dinner for two for $49. The Ocean Mixed Grill will be available starting Feb. 25.

Price: Prices vary by dish. Angler's Catch special is under $20.

The Chicken

The Chicken has released its Lenten menu that includes seven dishes:

  • Voodoo Shrimp: Fried shrimp tossed in voodoo sauce ($9.99).
  • Fish Sandwich: Crispy fried cod filet with American cheese, lettuce, tomato and tartar sauce with a choice of side ($8.99). 
  • Bang Bang Shrimp Tacos: Grilled shrimp with Bang Bang cabbage, cilantro and lime, served with a side of rice ($9.99).
  • Bang Bang Fish Tacos: Fried cod filet with Bang Bang cabbage, cilantro and lime, served with a side of rice ($9.99). 
  • Fish and Chips: Served with lemon and tartar sauce, fries and coleslaw ($10.99).
  • Grilled Cod: Drizzled with lemon butter, with broccoli and rice ($10.99).
  • Shrimp Pizza: Garlic butter sauce, cheese, shrimp, cilantro, green onion, drizzled with Bang Bang sauce ($12.99).

Enjoy plenty of seafood specialties at Culver's for Lent:

  • North Atlantic Cod Sandwich or Dinner: Wild-caught then hand-battered in herbs and spices and fried. The cod can be enjoyed as a sandwich or dinner with Culver’s secret family recipe tartar sauce.
